Do I need an international driver's license?
No, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not compulsory, but visitors do need a valid Sri Lankan driving permit to drive legally. The temporary permit is issued at the DMT (Department of Motor Traffic) office in the Airport Lobby, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are two simple options.
Option 1, Sri Lankan temporary driving permit: present your passport and your valid national driving licence. The licence must have at least 6 months of validity remaining and be in English or accompanied by an officially endorsed English translation. The fee is 50 USD.
Option 2, International Driving Permit (IDP) holders: your IDP can be endorsed at the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AA Ceylon) for around 30 USD. This process takes some time.
For your convenience, we can complete either process for you in advance of your arrival, so please contact us for more information. Please note that AA Ceylon is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so please plan your dates accordingly.
Do I need to pay a security deposit for a car rental?
Yes, a refundable security deposit is required for all car rentals. The minimum deposit amount is $300 USD. This will be fully refunded to you at the end of your rental period, provided the vehicle is returned in its original condition.
Are there mileage limits on the cars?
No, our daily rates include unlimited mileage. You don't have to worry about hidden kilometer charges at the end of your trip.
How do I pay for the tour or rental?
Payment details will be discussed upon booking confirmation via WhatsApp. Usually, we accept cash payments (USD, EUR, or LKR) upon arrival at the airport or at the start of your tour.
Could you please provide information regarding the speed limit on the road?
On highways, the maximum speed limit is 100 km/h, and tolls are applicable. In urban areas, the speed limit is 50 km/h. For out-of-town travel, the speed limit is 70 km/h.
